I think it is so important to be a goal oriented person; today I am proud of what I’ve done. I don’t want to be a person who “toots their own horn” because those people tend to suck hard. But I have to hand it to myself. I am putting the finishing touches on getting ready for my trip. I have been calling banks and phone companies, going to doctor’s appointments, and squeezing in time for friends wherever I can. This will probably be my last post before I leave on Wednesday. The trip preparation phase is over. The going phase is starting. And I have to take a step back and just be proud that I put forth a plan and executed it. I made a goal and was able to stick with it.
We all have things we want. I have desired to travel since I was a kid. I love experiencing new places, people, and cultures. I have always wanted to plan a trip like this, but it wasn’t until this past winter that I recognized that it was possible, or yet that I was capable. As cliché as this sounds, I remember when I said yes. One snowy morning, on my way to open the coffee shop at 5:30, I heard the song “At Home” by the Crystal Fighters and I made this realization that I was hiding behind all of my fear. I started planning this trip, and for the first time in a very long time, I was putting my energy into something that felt right. This is becoming more than just a trip to me, but a celebration of hard work. I worked hard and made a lot of sacrifices to make this goal a reality.
But I want the people who read this post to take time and examine their own goals. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want that promotion? Do you want to plan a trip too? Stop telling yourself all the same excuses and find the motivation to make your own happiness. Put away the Abba cassettes, Muriel Heslop. Find that one thing you want the most and put a plan in motion to make it happen! Do your research, look for precedents, and use your imagination. As long as it is what you want, it doesn’t matter how impossible it seems to others. Your goals are like children. Each one starts as a baby. The more you feed it and learn about it, the more you can better nurture it and watch it grow. And if you don’t get frustrated, you aren’t doing it right. Like your children, you should never abandon your goals. Don’t be a dead-beat dreamer. Dreams and goals are real and they are achieved everyday by those who recognize and nurture them.
So today I am proud. I will toot that damn horn! I am proud that I motivated myself to plan this trip. I put up with a lot of grief from people who are skeptics, but they can suck it. This is my trip. Do you think people didn’t laugh at Obama when he decided to run for president, or when he decided to run a second time? Do you think Roxanne didn’t catch hell when she decided to be a lesbian? Fortune favors the beaver. Could I be more prepared to leave? Absolutely. But I am actually leaving. For the first time in my life I feel like I’m following my dreams… it is an amazing feeling, and I’m glad to share it with you. Post your goals in the comment section. I want to hear them too.
